ASEAN GAMES 2015

Thank you so much for reading ‘Prisoner of Hope’. I feel this book has been simmering within me for the longest time, and I cannot help but thank the many people who have assisted in giving birth to this project and bringing it to fruition.

I would like to thank DPM Heng Swee Keat for writing the Foreword. He has done an excellent job in crafting the tone and direction of the book. Many thanks are also due to Dr Tan Lai Yong who, as the advisor on this project, has been instrumental in linking everyone involved and helping all of us to steer this project in the right direction.

To the Writers Hui Xin, Yong Qin, Isabella, Ding Heng and Yuki, I must express my gratitude for your labour of love in this project. Thank you for your patience through the many revisions we had to go make. Thank you, too, to the copy editors who have helped make the book such an interesting and easy read. Thank you to Beatrice and Yu Chun Qiang who have been brilliant in their illustration and calligraphy work, respectively. Finally, but definitely not last in importance, I must give a huge shout out to Esther, who has been so diligent in her excellent work as Production Editor.

Ultimately, this book, ‘Prisoner of Hope’, is really not about me. While the main character is a certain Dr. Darren Chua, the theme this book is trying to drive at is timeless and is not meant to be bounded by certain individuals. In fact, this book is directed at you, the reader. It is for anyone who has ever felt trapped within themselves, locked in their own psyche, but still desiring the ability to strike out and break free. I hope this book can encourage and empower you to be bold, and to live the life you have been designed to live, and be that person that you were destined to be.

Sim Ann –  Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth & Ministry of Communications and Information  “All the para athletes I have met are amazing people. Their stories speak of the raw emotion of defeat and triumph, the grit and determination to rise above daily life challenges, and most importantly, the will power to hold on to and pursue their dreams. I was delighted that Darren had taken the bold step to share his story in this book. Reading it, I could not help but be inspired by the purposefulness of his journey and the impact he continues to have through his work, life and sharing. An athlete, scholar, entrepreneur, educator, and motivational speaker are some of the ways to describe Darren. Above all, I would describe him as a great human being that has made it his life’s work to hel
